Beyond the Plate: Why Your Watch Party Choices Matter

The countdown is on. In just a few weeks, the world’s eyes will be on North America: and specifically right here in our backyard: for the FIFA World Cup 2026. Whether you’re heading to the stadium in downtown Atlanta or hosting a gathering in Decatur, the energy is electric. There’s something magical about the "beautiful game" that brings us together, sparking a sense of community and shared hope.

But at I Will Survive, Inc., we know that community is about more than just the score at the end of ninety minutes. It’s about looking out for one another. It’s about the conversations we have over food and the small choices we make that add up to a lifetime of wellness.

As we gear up for June’s festivities, we want to invite you to look "beyond the plate." Every bite and every sip you enjoy during a watch party is a choice: a choice to fuel your body, celebrate your health, and play a proactive role in breast cancer prevention.

Prevention Starts on Your Plate

When we talk about breast cancer, we often focus on the finish line: the treatments and the survivorship. But at IWS, we’re just as passionate about the starting block: prevention education.

We’ve learned that what we eat can actually play a defensive role against cancer. This is especially vital for the Black and Brown women in our community. Statistics show that Black women face disproportionate rates of aggressive breast cancer diagnoses and higher mortality rates. While we can’t control every risk factor, we can empower ourselves through nutrition.

Let’s look at how you can turn your World Cup snack table into a powerhouse of prevention.

The Starting Lineup: Recipes That Play Offense

You don't have to sacrifice flavor to stay healthy. These "fan favorites" are designed to be as bold and exciting as a last-minute goal.

1. The Crunchy Contender: Chickpea "Popcorn"

Instead of greasy potato chips that leave you feeling sluggish, try roasted chickpeas. They are packed with fiber: a superstar for breast cancer prevention.

The Play: Toss canned chickpeas (rinsed and thoroughly dried) with olive oil, sea salt, and a dash of smoked paprika. Roast at 400°F for 30–40 minutes until golden and crunchy.

Why it wins: You get that satisfying crunch plus a huge boost of plant-based protein and fiber.
Health Note: Dietary fiber helps regulate estrogen levels in the body. Research suggests that for every 10 grams of fiber you add to your daily diet, your risk of breast cancer may drop by about 7%.

2. The Defensive Wall: Hummus and Veggie Goalposts

Swap out the heavy sour cream dips for a vibrant, nourishing hummus spread.

The Play: Slice up bell peppers, carrots, and cucumbers: fresh from your local DeKalb Farmers Market: and serve alongside a bold lemon-garlic hummus.

Why it wins: Carotenoid-rich vegetables (the brightly colored ones) are linked to lower breast cancer risk.
Health Note: Studies show that women with higher carotenoid levels in their blood have a lower risk of developing breast cancer. These nutrients act as antioxidants, protecting your cells from damage.

3. The Striker: Baked Buffalo Cauliflower

Wings are a watch party staple, but the deep-fried version is a heavy hitter on your heart and long-term health.

The Play: Coat cauliflower florets in a light batter of flour and spices. Bake at 425°F until tender and golden, then toss in buffalo sauce. Serve with a side of Greek yogurt-based ranch.

Why it wins: You get all the zing of wings without the processed fats.
Health Note: Cauliflower is a cruciferous vegetable, which contains a compound called sulforaphane. This compound has been studied for its potential to inhibit the growth of cancer cells.

Rethinking the "Cooler": The Case for Mocktails

We know that in the heat of a Georgia summer, a cold drink is non-negotiable. However, as an organization dedicated to prevention, we have to talk about the link between alcohol and breast cancer.

The science is clear: ethanol is a primary culprit in raising breast cancer risk. It doesn't matter if it's beer, wine, or liquor; even moderate consumption can increase your risk. This is why alcohol-free choices are one of the most powerful tools in your prevention toolkit.

Try these "breast-friendly" mocktails that are as refreshing as they are beautiful:

🍋 The Pomegranate "Nojito"

What’s in it: Sparkling water + fresh lime + fresh mint leaves + a splash of pomegranate juice.
Why it wins: Pomegranates are rich in antioxidants that may help reduce inflammation. Garnish with a lime wedge for a drink that looks stunning in your hand.

🌺 The BeltLine Spritz

What’s in it: Unsweetened hibiscus iced tea + a squeeze of fresh orange + a splash of seltzer water.
Why it wins: Hibiscus is packed with Vitamin C and anti-inflammatory properties. It’s refreshing, ruby-red, and perfect for a June afternoon.

Support the Mission: The 10 for 10 Campaign

Making healthy choices at home is a great first step, but we want to make sure everyone in our community has access to the resources they need. That’s why we launched the 10 for 10 Campaign.

Our goal is simple: We are looking for 10,000 people to commit just $10 a month for 10 months. These funds go directly toward providing financial assistance, prevention education, and wellness programs for those affected by breast cancer.

Your $10 might seem small, but when we team up, it becomes a $1 million impact. It means a mother doesn't have to choose between her treatment and her rent. It means a young woman in Atlanta can get the screening she needs.
