Sista Strut Atlanta 2026: Walk With Us on October 3rd for Breast Cancer Awareness in Women of Color
When you stand in the middle of a crowd wearing pink, there’s an energy you can’t quite describe. It’s a mix of grief and hope, of memory and movement. I remember meeting a young mother at a local park last year. She was only 34, clutching her daughter’s hand, and wearing a shirt that said "Survivor." She told me that during her treatment, she felt like she was on an island. "I didn't think anyone looked like me or understood what I was going through," she whispered.
That’s why we walk. We walk so that no one feels like they’re on an island. We walk to bridge the gap between awareness and action.
On Saturday, October 3, 2026, the streets of Atlanta will once again turn pink for Sista Strut Atlanta, organized by iHeartMedia’s Power 105.3. This isn't just any walk: it’s a 3K movement specifically designed to heighten awareness about breast cancer in women of color.
At I Will Survive, Inc., we’re beyond honored to announce that we are the official 2026 beneficiary for the Atlanta walk. This partnership allows us to continue our mission of providing a safety net for those who need it most.
Why Sista Strut? The Urgent Need for Awareness
You might ask, "Why a separate walk for women of color?" The answer lies in the numbers, and they are stark.
African American women have a 41% higher death rate from breast cancer than white women. Let that sink in. Despite similar rates of diagnosis, the outcomes are tragically different. Furthermore, Black women are more likely to be diagnosed before the age of 40, often with more aggressive forms of the disease.
In Atlanta, these disparities hit home. Our community faces unique barriers: from access to quality healthcare to the financial strain of long-term treatment. Sista Strut was created to shine a light on these specific issues, ensuring that women of color aren't just a footnote in the conversation about breast cancer, but the focus of it.

Proud to Be Your 2026 Beneficiary
At I Will Survive, Inc. (IWS), we’re a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to empowering individuals at higher risk for or affected by breast cancer. Being named the beneficiary for Sista Strut Atlanta 2026 means that every step you take and every dollar raised helps us provide critical services to survivors right here in our city.
We believe that true support goes "Beyond the Pink Ribbon." It’s not just about awareness; it’s about making sure families stay stable during the most difficult journey of their lives.

How We Support: Our Key Programs
When we talk about walking for a cause, we want you to know exactly where your support goes. We focus on three pillars of care:
1. Financial Freedom for Fighters
The financial burden of breast cancer is often as taxing as the physical one. We’ve seen families forced to choose between paying for life-saving medication and their monthly rent. Our Financial Freedom for Fighters program provides direct support services, such as paying housing costs, to help lift that heavy weight. Through our partnership with ARCHI, we serve as a trusted housing ally, ensuring that survivors have a safe, stable place to call home while they recover.

2. EmpowerHER Wellness Workshops
Recovery isn’t just about the absence of disease; it’s about the presence of health. Our EmpowerHER Wellness Program is a holistic initiative. We host workshops that cover everything from nutrition and exercise to mental health and financial literacy. We partner with leaders like Grady, Northside, and the Center for Black Women's Wellness to provide referrals and practical tools for emotional and physical strength.
3. Beyond the Diagnosis Mentoring
No one should have to navigate this journey alone. Our Beyond the Diagnosis program connects survivors with peers who truly understand life after a diagnosis. Through our partner Cancer and Careers, we also offer professional coaching to help survivors manage their jobs or return to the workforce. We even offer free therapy sessions with Mindful Discover Therapeutic Solutions because your mental health is just as important as your physical health.
Why We Walk Together: Building a Secure Community
You might wonder why we place such an emphasis on the "walk" itself. Why not just a donation drive?
There is a profound sense of security that comes from community. When we walk together, we are building a protective barrier around each other. We are saying, "I see you, I support you, and I am here for you."
Think of it this way: Why do we walk? To show up. Why do we show up? To be seen. Why do we want to be seen? To find others like us. Why do we find others? To build a network. Why build a network? To ensure that no one ever has to fight this battle in isolation again. That is the ultimate security: knowing that your community has your back.
